Valkyrie's project management tool takes flight

Utilizing the latest Microsoft accessibility standards and mobile-first best practices, Valkyrie showcased my capabilities as a UX designer

Valkyrie is a comprehensive project management tool built on the Microsoft Services platform which provides instant access to customer contracts, project workflows, and real-time document tracking. As the principal UX designer in charge of designing Valkyrie's user interface, my goal was to raise the bar for Microsoft. As such, Valkyrie sets a new standard for executing business transactions quickly and easily. With the flexibility of Microsoft SharePoint, Valkyrie provides both TAMs and customers a unique user experience and interface tailored to their company’s business structure to reduce the individual user learning curve and maximize productivity.

Custom built, from the ground up

Valkyrie presented many challenges to myself and my team. The largest effort was building Valkyrie's web portal which helps manage activities such as RFPs, SQL analytics, reporting services, submittals, and approvals by integrating with Microsoft tools like Outlook and Excel. Here I had to build a robust user flow to capture daily business operations. This feature list consisted of daily logs, routing numbers, schedule variances, and backlogs to reduce the risk associated with implementing new software solutions.

Flexible Interface

Part of the scope of work was building Valkyrie with customizable interface elements - including LESS/CSS3 theme colors, user dashboards, and filtering which could be saved per application install.

Security Clearance

At the time of its conception, Valkyrie was a highly secret project on a need-to-know basis up until its release. As such, I was asked to design a branded security clearance card for Valkyrie's inner-team.

Mobile Optimization

Anticipating user interaction

One of the biggest shifts in how we developed Valkyrie was a focus on mobile-first best practices. This meant the application needed to be highly customizable to meet accessibility standards for users with visual impairments - including minimum contrast ratios, variable font sizing, and clear calls-to-action.

 

Unveiling Microsoft's Latest Tool

Just like any other product release, my team and I built Valkyrie within a dedicated work-back schedule from the scheduled release date. Before revealing its announcement, the Microsoft team contracted our creative agency to develop a video real highlighting some of the unique features of this brand new application. Today Valkyrie's toolset has been adopted by over 20+ departments within Microsoft.
