ImagineCup captures the imagination

This annual competition brings together students and developers to help solve today's global challenges

Considered as the "Olympics of Technology" by computer science and engineering departments, ImagineCup is one of the top competitions Microsoft offers related to technology and software design. That's why when I was first approached to lead a team that would help design this year's conference branding - I was thrilled at the opportunity. What makes ImagineCup unique is that all competitors create projects that address the ImagineCup theme: "Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems". These students then enter to win the ImagineCup trophy awarded to only the most prestigious of teams. Started in 2003, it has steadily grown in size, with more than 358,000 competitors representing 183+ countries and regions each year. Under my art direction, I lead the effort in video asset creation, web development, and email marketing.

Keynote Promotion & Video Editing

Needless to say, when someone tells you the CEO of Microsoft (Satya Nadella) is going to be delivering the keynote speech at a conference that you will help design... it's a bit intimidating. But with the help of a little After Effects magic and video editing in Adobe Premiere, I constructed a promotional video for non-attendees to watch online later that day. Receiving content on the fly, with less than a 24hr turn-around time proved both challenging as well as rewarding; most of the editing needed to utilize jump-cuts and quick transitions to emphasize the energy of the event.

One of the most substantial opportunities we were presented with by ImagineCup was the chance to redesign their event logo. In years past, their logo had already gone through a few revisions - but this year our agency was tasked with envisioning a new treatment. The results were amazing, and captured the essence of the event... the student!

Physical branding is essential, especially when it comes to brand recognition amongst consumers. By adopting a consistent set of style guidelines, I was able to bring about a holistic feel to Microsoft's premier student competition. From lanyards to swag bags, every participant felt the brand's presence at the conference.
